Before you start

You need administrator access to PRTG Network Monitor and a BulkSMS account with credits.

The PRTG core server must be able to make outbound HTTPS connections (port 443).

PRTG has built-in "BulkSMS" providers in its list, but they use an older BulkSMS interface. We recommend the custom URL setup below, which uses the current BulkSMS API and an API token.

Create a BulkSMS API token

Log in to your BulkSMS account and go to Settings > Developers.

Click Create API Token and give it a name, for example PRTG. Copy the Token ID and Token Secret. The secret is only shown once.

Set up SMS delivery

In PRTG, go to Setup > System Administration > Notification Delivery and find SMS Delivery.

Choose to use a custom URL and enter:

https://api.bulksms.com/v1/messages/send?to=%SMSNUMBER&body=%SMSTEXT

Turn on HTTP basic authentication and enter your Token ID as the user name and your Token Secret as the password.

Click Test SMS Settings, enter your mobile number in international format, and check the message arrives.

Create an SMS notification

Go to Setup > Account Settings > Notification Templates and add a template.

Turn on Send SMS/Pager Message, enter the mobile number to alert, and edit the message if you like.

Add the template as a notification trigger on the sensors, devices or groups you want alerts for.

Troubleshooting

Authentication failed: check the Token ID and Token Secret, and that basic authentication is turned on.

No message arrives: check PRTG's Logs > System Events > Notifications, and look for the message under Sent Messages in BulkSMS.

Connection errors: make sure the PRTG server can reach api.bulksms.com on port 443.

All setup and ready to go!
